ReadyCT’s First Responders Youth Academy (FRYA) ignites big dreams — and even BIGGER service — in students!

FRYA is a paid summer internship program designed to introduce students to careers in emergency response through hands-on training and educational experiences.

Over the course of five weeks, participants complete 120 hours of immersive learning, including workshops in firefighting, fire safety, fire protection, “shoot/don’t shoot” scenarios, K-9 demonstrations, and opportunities to earn industry-recognized credentials, including First Aid and CPR/AED.

This hands-on program gives students direct access to first responders who have built their own public service careers, which helps students gain a clear understanding of what public service work really involves.

In 2025, FRYA operated in Hartford, East Hartford, and New Britain, and expansion plans are underway.

Work-Life Skills That Matter

In addition to learning what first responders do on a day-to-day basis, FRYA provides participants with the opportunity to develop valuable skills that can be applied to any career.

The program includes a variety of workshops and specialized training sessions designed to enhance participants‘ communication, teamwork, and critical thinking skills. Other elements include team building, time management, and resume writing workshops.

Students leave feeling excited and with a clear understanding of what is necessary to pursue a career in public service.
